Thick Face, Black Heart - The Review Part 3

This is the Part 3 review of the book, Thick Face Black Heart by Chin Ning Chu. Click for Part 1 and Part 2.

In Chapter 3, the contents revolves around the concept of Dharma. According to wikipedia, the word Dharma comes from Sanskrit which happens to be the oldest language in the world and said to originate from ancient India. So, that means civilization begins in India?

Dharma can be simplified as "the right way of living" or "proper conduct" and considered as The Way of the Higher Truths. It also refers to the teaching and doctrines of the founders of these tradition, such as Gautama Buddha. In a sense, it is similar to the ancient Chinese way of the Tao or Taoism.

The author, in order to make it clearer, gave example such as A Warrior's Dharma is to slay the enemies of his nation and a physician's Dharma is to save lives, even enemies' life. So, this would be like a doctor's Dharma is to save lives and a soldier's Dharma is to fight for his country.

In the book, there is this righteous Thick Face, Black Heart practitioner and the unconscionable Thick Face, Black Heart practitioner who is willing to win at ALL COSTS without any regards of the consequences to other people. So, with Dharma in one's consciousness, one can be a righteous Thick Face, Black Heart practitioner.

All along in Chapter 3, the author shows stories which illustrate the Dharma in practice and end with the emphasis that Dharma is the natural law that guides our actions and is the foundation of Thick Face, Black Heart.

"Where there is Dharma, there is Victory"

Pitcher Plant Rice (Nasi Periuk Kera)

Ate the Pitcher Plant Rice (don't really know what it is called but what would you call rice inside pitcher plant as? Pitcher Plant Rice, correct? =p)

It is quite interesting that they make it in such a way that it resemble the "Bak Zhang" as in this post. It uses pitcher plant as the wrapper for the rice and the ingredient inside which consists of mostly sambals. Sambal is a mixture of spices that the locals use to spice up their food.

It is definitely different and oh, Pitcher Plant is also called "Periuk Kera" in Bahasa Malaysia.

TMNet Streamyx......WHY

***UPDATES below***

Got my Streamyx bill this month and to my surprise, the bill is RM76 which has increment of RM10 compared to my previous monthly bills. The bill did not even state why am I overcharged for my monthly Streamyx bill so I went over to the online bill checking system and found out that the extra RM10 is from the wireless hotspot.

WIRELESS HOTSPOT which I DID NOT USE and SUBSCRIBE in the first place. Anytime happy happy just bill unsuspecting and naive and gullible customers just like that is it? Without even telling or asking me whether I WANT the service or not. How come like that one. Unprofessional leh.

The screen shot of the bill

(click for bigger resolution image)

So, Yours Truly wrote an email to TMNet and as usual, it takes like forever for them to reply. Now, don't get me wrong. So far, I am satisfied with the service Streamyx provided. The problems that happens to a lot of people doesn't happen to me. Since the installation until now, the connection been good and never have any problem with it except for this time of course.

So, now AM waiting for them to reply and also hope that they will agree not to charge the extra RM10. The amount is not that big but I definitely will not pay for something that I did not use. Doing charity also need to see mood one what. Will call them up if I did not receive any reply soon. (Heard many stories from those who experienced TMNet Customer Service and live to tell about it. =p)

So, TMNet PUHLEZZZZZ don't just include additional service and then charge it directly without even notifying the customers. So, the RM10 no need to pay ho? And remember to UNSUBSCRIBE the additional service which is kinda useless for me anyway. =p

So, CHILL and do as what I requested. =p

The cancellation of the hotspot is fast enough with the deduction made to my bill the following month. Hmmmm seems like you have to use your streamyx mail and use the priority function before you send the mail to get the response needed.

Nu Er Hong (Chinese Rice Wine)

Nu Er Hong is a type of rice wine, Chinese Rice Wine that is. It is a popular rice wine served at weddings for the Chinese. (However, I doubt that nowadays Chinese drinks this at weddings. With the abundant choices of western alcohol such as beer, whiskey, spirits and so on, more choices would incline in favor of western alcohol. =p)

Nu Er Hong if translated directly would be Red Daughter. So, it happens that traditionally this Nu Er Hong which bottles of rice wine would be buried upon the birth of a daughter and would be kept buried until the daughter marries. Then the Nu Er Hong would be unearthed at the wedding and the drinking begins.=p This is the practice since traditional times in ancient China I supposed.

Nu Er Hong have a 17% rating of alcohol level which is not too high. I tried Nu Er Hong in Labuan before and I would say that the taste is quite different. Not that it is that bad but I prefer whiskey any day. =p

The taste and smell is like "Tit Da Jao" like that. Normally "Tit Da Jao" is used as ointment for swelling, joint pains, or even sprains. Like the one I had described in earlier posts. Ultimately, it is not something that I would drink often. =p. On with the pictures.

A little bit of introduction about God Of Wealth. God of Wealth brings wealth (of course), and prosperity and supposed to bless the worshipers. So, normally those who wants to get rich or wealthy will do things like placing the statue in strategic places (Feng Shui)

So, that is it for the introduction. I was the God Of Wealth for the Ang Pao Nite (Celebration for Chinese New Year) for two consecutive years during my university time. So, who want to be blessed come to this blog...=p

Japanese Lesson Part 1

During my university years, I have taken up Japanese language as a foreign language that is supposed to add value to undergraduates =p . That time all things Japanese are the in things, so the gullible me was influenced to take up the language out of languages such as French, Arabic, Kadazan, and some I forget.

So, since sharing is good mmmkay, I feel the need to share what I know with all of you. Please feel free to chip in and also correct me if I am wrong. After all, I only have JLPT Level 4 cert. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test certification.

First of all, the introduction of Japanese Language. Japanese language is used and spoken by the Japanese people in a country called Japan. (Brrrrr, cold....I know.... =p)The Japanese writing system is divided into 3 categories which is the Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

Hiragana is curvilinear in style and phonetic and can be considered as the basic Japanese writing system. Katakana can be considered the secondary writing system used primarily for foreign names or words of foreign origin. Kanji in the other hand is similar to Chinese writing characters and each conveys meaning, most of which have at leas two readings. Aside from the primary 3 writing system, there is this form which is similar to the Chinese Pin Yin, the Romanji.

Romanji means Roman letters and is used particularly for the convenience of foreigners and normally used by foreigners to have better understanding on the Japanese language.

Example of usage:

Wa-ta-shi-wa I-gi-ri-su Ni I-ki-ma-su
(I am going to England)
*note- the I is pronounced as yi*
*the -ma-su can be pronounced as mas as in I-ki-mas*

Watashiwa Mareshiaa Jin Desu
(I am a Malaysian)

Alright, lets go to some daily useful expression that is more common shall we?

(Good Morning)

(Good Afternoon)

(Good Evening)

Ja mata / Ja ne
(Normally said when parting with friends- informal goodbye)

Shitsurei shimasu
(polite way of saying goodbye, normally used to superior and the elders)

(Good Night- only said before going to bed)

Ogenki desuka
(How are you?)

Domo Arigato Gozaimasu
(Thank you very much)

Chotto Matte Kudasai
(Please wait for a while)

Ganbatte Kudasai

(Encouragement- like Jia You)

So, that is it for Japanese Lesson Part 1. One have to learn how to crawl first before learning how to walk. Again, please feel free to correct me if there are mistakes and we can learn together and share our knowledge. All opinions are welcomed.

As the lessons goes, it will go into more advance usage of the Japanese Language. So, Stay tuned for Japanese Lesson Part 2.

Princeton- My Sis Pet ChiHuaHua

This entry is all about my sister's pet, Princeton. Yes, it is a Chihuahua. Mixed though, so kind of bigger than other chihuahua but still small for my standard nevertheless.

This Chihuahua is like a sex deprived dog or a love making machine. Every time my sis brings back the Chihuahua, it would like locked on to my leg and start humping away. Yes, HUMPING like a mad rabbit. =p (Quite hilarious, there is this one time the chihuahua have a cramp from all the humping. Will try to catch the action on camera and post it as soon as I manage to do that. Not easy task I tell you, with the chihuahua humping away furiously. =p)

Thick Face, Black Heart - The Review Part 2

This is the continuation from the previous review of the book Thick Face, Black Heart. Read about Part 1 before continuing with this post which is the Part 2 and there will be 16 parts all together. =p

So, it will be a 16 series review (16 chapters) which is quite long, but bear with me as this is definitely worth it. =p

Part 2 will talk about Chapter 2 of the Thick Face, Black Heart by Chin-Ning Chu. Chapter 2 talks about the preparation for Thick Face, Black Heart and in it there are 11 principles as according to the author that is needed for the preparation.

There is this quote on the first page that leaves quite an impression.

"The flower which is single
Need not envy the thorns
That are numerous"

(Rabindranath Tagore)

So, basically in order to prepare for Thick Face, Black Heart one need to understand him/herself and do not fear success and also failure.

Another quote from the book.

"This is perfect
This is perfect
From the perfect springs the perfect
IF the perfect is taken from the perfect,
Only the perfect remains.

(Ancient Hindu Scripture)

In this chapter, the author gives a lot of examples and stories that illustrate the idea and opinion towards the matter. One need to have the courage to believe in oneself. Most of the people I know doesn't have confidence in themselves although they can do better in their lives. However by believing in oneself also doesn't mean that one overestimate own capabilities and ability. There is this need to have balance. Everything in the world has it's own balance. The Ying and Yang, so they say. The Good and the Evil.

The author state that Creation and Destruction are not opposites as they are two aspects of a single force. In nature, whenever there are destruction, there are bound to be creation somewhere and vice versa.

Us, humans always categorize something as good or bad and right or wrong. How to define good? bad? right? wrong? The capability to differentiate is inside everyone however more than often it is the environment, the surrounding and other external factors that affects how everyone thinks.

For example, something which is wrong, if the whole world say it is right or the more people say it is right, the more the possibility the wrong becomes right as according to the author, we do not possess the breadth of vision to see the necessity in the overall scheme of things.

That is it for Part 2. Next up would be Part 3. So, what is your opinion regarding Part 2? Sharing is good MMMKAYYYY.... =p.

Working Life

Been working for almost 9 months now and so far it is still acceptable in the sense that I do not dread going to work every morning. One might say that I actually liked going to work.
(Yes, I am normal...Quite normal..=p...Some might say that how is it possible that anyone likes going to work and not dreading waking up every morning just to work. This I assume from the complaints and stories I heard about...What??? Work again??? =p)

My own opinion towards working might be different than others, however ultimately all work for MONEY..NO? That would be a definite yes. And since one have to work, why not do it cheerfully and with the spirit that you are earning the salary given and perform to expectation. (This assuming that the salary is on par with the workload and the time spend in which I know that a lot of you are not getting what is your worth. Right? =p)

You are actually paid for the time you spent working, TIME is Money as one would put it. So, by working or using your time you are compensated with salary. (But...but ...some work for free, HAH how bout that????........ I heard someone says. =p) That is not considered working, that is CHARITY and normally, I say normally Charity are done by the rich. Agree? Not to really do charity BUT to SHOW OFF that they ARE doing charity. But they are not showing off some might argue, if that is the case then there is no need to publish the names and just be anonymous right?

Speaking of working life, the work environment is very important in order to be productive not to mention the management must be "sensitive". Sensitive in the sense that caring for employees well being and benefits. No one wants to feels that they are being exploited. However, if you can exploit your employees or people without them feeling being exploited, then you might have the essence of Thick Face Black Heart.

Employees are the asset of any companies and companies with high employees turnover naturally would not be that ideal. The whole company are supported by its employees and the productivity of any companies on whether increased or decreased also depends on the employees. So, EMPLOYEES are important asset to any company. Especially those employees who are loyal, responsible, and productive. How to make loyal, responsible and productive employees? I would not go in-depth about that in this post but ultimately it is the salary or compensation for the time spent and efforts done that matters. There are other factors affecting this but ultimately it is the $$$$$, the moolah... =p

I can go on and on and on and on regarding this topic so it would be better to stop here and leave the rest to your opinions.

Hows your working life? Your opinion? Your suggestions? All thoughts and opinions are welcomed.

To all employees:

To all employers:

Updates to the Sibu Bullying

The Sheer Idiocy
*Posing for the camera after the bullying*

**Again, benardcometh.blogspot.com DOES NOT say that it is alright to do crime providing that you are not caught or in this case posing for the camera...=p**

(click for bigger resolution picture)

Green Smiley = Bullies ..... Blue Smiley= Victim

** The faces have been replaced with smiley to protect those kids. Yes...KIDS...... especially the victim. See..... I am a nice guy after all....=p**

Referring to the previous post that concerns the bullying in Sibu. The bullies had been suspended from school for two weeks. The victim only dare to report to the police when the video was spread through the Internet and the police did not even do anything since there were no more injuries on his body. So it says. With the police going to the concerned schools to counsel the affected parties. (Eastern Times, Friday July 13)

The injuries that heal doesn't means that the incident never happened. And if beating up or causing harm to another person is not crime, then I don't know what crime is. Yes, those boys should be given second chances. Everyone deserve chances but bullying cases has been there unsolved for as long as I can remember, every time there any cases in school they tried to hide it from the media and not to make a big deal out of it. Well, that little small things, if accumulated and left unattended could be disastrous.

And yes, bullying is always linked to gangsterism. The bullies often felt that they are powerful because they know someone outside or even have their so called big brothers to back them up. And that, ladies and gentlemen gives them the right to bully. However, some bullying cases are done by those who have larger gang in school and the larger your gang is, the more powerful you get or so it seems.

Instead of trying to prevent bullying cases and seriously implement policy to deter bullying, normally the school and parents resort to conceal the matter. No big matter they say, just normal kids fighting. Yeah right, keep telling that to yourself. Remember my last post regarding the matter? The Virginia Tech Shootings? And also countless similar incidents that happened because of bullying. The only comfort we can have is that LUCKILY in Malaysia, it IS illegal to have firearm and one cannot purchase firearm easily. Try to ponder on that.

So, please don't just ignore bullying cases just because it is said to be insignificant and not THAT serious compared to other crimes and THAT bullying is NOT crime. By preventing bullying, crime is actually being prevented. Have a look at this article and this.

Some tips to prevent bullying can be found here. So, take action now and increase awareness regarding the matter.

Together, we can make a difference. (Sounds familiar? =p)

Thick Face, Black Heart - The Review Part 1

The book Thick Face, Black Heart - The Path To Thriving, Winning, and Succeeding by Chin-Ning Chu was recommended to me by my lecturer. Skeptical at first but as I read, it is actually quite interesting.

In the book, the author explains about what is the meaning of Thick Face, Black Heart and ultimately that Thick Face, Black Heart is the Tao of life. Altogether there are 16 chapters in the book.

Chapter 1 is about the Essence of Thick Face, Black Heart. There are quite a few interesting quotes in this chapter such as

"Give up virtue, renounce wisdom; People will benefit a thousand times

Give up kindness, renounce morality; People will embrace love and filial piety

Give up cleverness, renounce greed; bandits and thieves will vanish"

(Lao Tzu- Tao Te Ching)

The author particularly used a quote as a starting for chapter 1- The Essence of Thick Face, Black Heart. The quote is

"When you conceal your will from others, that is Thick

When you impose your will on others, that is Black

(Lee Zhong Chang)

As with the quotes, the book forces readers to think deeper in order to understand what the author want to convey. The quotes is translated to English from Chinese and no doubt some of it's meaning or essence cannot be translated correctly, however the author tries to make readers understand by giving examples.

Thick Face act as shield and Black Heart act as spear. By utilizing these, the author believes that one can be successful in business and life. As one goes through chapter 1, there are still few quotes that is placed at strategic places which stimulate the brain to think deep as to what is the exact meaning.

Some of the quotes are:

"Conquering others requires force.

Conquering oneself requires strength."

"When the great Tao is forgotten, virtue and morality arise.

When knowledge and intelligence are born, the great pretense begins.

When there is no harmony within the family, filial piety and devotion arise.

When the country is confused and in chaos, loyal officials appear."

(Lao Tze- Tao Te Ching)

I finds that all the quotes from the book is quite enlightening and after all it is mostly from this famous guy Lao Tze in Ancient China who is widely known for his philosophical thoughts.

Another few sentences that I want to quote before ending chapter 1 are:

"Thick Face, Black Heart is and is not about ruthlessness, yet one will learn that by adapting

and adopting non-destructive ruthlessness, one will gain the freedom in actions necessary to

achieve effectiveness in daily task execution."

The ultimate courage of a Thick Face, Black Heart warrior is dispassion which means

having courage to fight in spite of fear, to be able to detach from the emotion associated with

defeat so that its presence does not thwart you"

Chin-Ning Chu)
